Nelly wrote this song because ever since his sister died of Leukemia in 2005, he stopped writing songs. But, his sister appeared in his dreams and told him to start writing again. The song is about his sister, not about not having a true love.

Nelly at one point had a desire to be with someone who was so special and so significant to him but she is so far away and he doesn't think that it will happen so he just calls it just a dream because he doesn't think it'll ever happen.
I think it is amazing how Nelly did this song because of his sister and I hope he writes more songs about his sister it is really sweet and nice that he did it for his sister.I hope to here more of his songs and I am a huge fan of his song called just a dream and all his other music it is really amazing. Me and my brother and 2 sisters love your music and I hope I can see him preform one day. I am doing a project about him and other singers who do things for reasons that it should be done for and for fun. Please keep writing and I hope he does his beast at everything. I hope he remembers his sister forever.

i can relate to him...i love to write songs even if they are for my eyes only. anyway i had a very close friend die of suicide and i completely stopped and didnt want to do it ever again. then one night i had a dream of him talking to me saying to keep doing it. he was the only one that i would let read the songs and so i wrote one about how great of a person he was.
I had an amazing experience last year, when I fell in love with someone that lived far away from me, and we loved each other more than anything. But at the end she stopped talking to me, and I dreamed after about how different it would've been if we were living in the same place. I think it has some connection to the song because I knew that our love was impossible, but my feelings did not let stop thinking about her. In his song it truly means about someone that loves his girl so much, but it'll never happen, and he just dreams it hoping it was true.
Nelly reflects on how he lost his ex and what he could have done differently if he had the chance. "Didn't give her all my love, I guess now I got my payback, now I'm in the club thinking all about my baby." Wow--Nelly is a guy who, after a break-up, doesn't just go to the club to hook up with the first person he sees. Instead, he actually is respectful to the woman he lost and simply reflects on his relationship with her.
